Paulo Castro (Palmira, Colombia, 1974) has a different taste in his mouth. He doesn’t use blank canvases to draw on; he doesn’t use little paintbrushes, or combine an infinite range of tones. And he’s not bothered about it. He doesn’t consider himself a painter, in any case. And for many people, such as curator Miguel Miguel, Castro is one of the best. Only for him painting has a different taste… and he likes that.

«Jesús Soto wasn’t a painter. Calling yourself a painter means you focus on evolving, on developing another approach to painting within painting itself. The interesting thing about situating yourself in the field of painting is that it confronts you with art conventions. When you make a work that uses painting as its starting point, you question it, you turn it into something else, but you still call it painting. And that, for me, gives it a special taste,» Castro says.

That special taste is on show at the La Cuadra Creativa Gallery in the exhibitionPaulo Castro-Recent Works, which shows the advances he is making in his research into canvas, which stops being a simple surface for art and becomes a key part of the work.

«My work is made using interacting elements, built using tensions and active, living forces that are visible to the naked eye. There’s a physical relationship there, which is determined by the structure and the materials’ properties. I like taking things to the extreme and that’s why I work with the canvas. In these 13 works it stops being a passive surface for representations that you paintupon and becomes part of the place where you paint,» he points out.

The results are almost three-dimensional works and this explains the homage that the exhibition pays to Venezuelan mastersJesús Soto and Alejandro Otero.

Castro represents their Kinetic art through a canvas that initially seems to be moving. «These works vibrate. I was really interested in the material. There was a certain Kinetic structure in the works that is very appealing and that I dealt with initially. And from there it occurred to me to pay homage to Soto, whose work I really admire», he says.
